Dear Jesus – my letter to Jesus this Christmas
Dear Jesus,
I don’t even know where to start.
Probably best to start from the beginning, right? And by the beginning, I mean that time in history that we celebrate each year – your birthday (you know, Christmas).
It’s around that time of year again – a time of joy, love and peace.
The happiness is infectious – the spirit of generosity, twinkling lights, carols, and Christmas movies…
And yet, it hurts my heart to see You forgotten in the lead up to and on a day that only exists because of You.
To see “Merry Christmas” replaced by “Happy Holidays”.
To watch the “Christ” drop off “Christmas” and replaced with a single consonant (X).
To witness presents preferred over Your Presence.
And Santa Claus exalted above Jesus Christ.
The world has lost sight of what really matters. We celebrate a holiday and yet are offended by the mention of the Person whose birth gave life to that very holiday.
As much as it saddens me, I also realise that at times I’ve been part of the problem. I’ve put too much focus on what presents to buy, where to travel, what to eat…
I get caught up in the busyness of it all, filling up my calendar with no room left for the One who deserves the first spot. I forget where my eyes should be fixed – on You.
Please, forgive me.
Please, show me how to love You this Christmas.
I know that starts with receiving the love You already give. A love that pursues me year-round, no matter the season.
My prayer is that this Christmas, others will experience Your love for the first time. A love matched by no other. I pray that the pain of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow would be covered by Your peace.
Prince of Peace, may they receive You as the best gift they’ll ever receive.
And as they do, may they step into a life of purpose and freedom, living for You.
Jesus. This Christmas, I celebrate You.
With love,
Oyelola
